Pillar 02 · Mental

Pro-active, not reactive.

A mentally fit person decides calmly in any situation and is not swung about by how other people are behaving. This is not detachment. It is the difference between responding to a room and being operated by it.

Self-test

Watch a toddler learning to walk. They fall, and there is no deliberation about whether to get up. Somewhere between then and now most of us learned to hesitate. Can you still rise again and again?

Autosuggestion — one hundred repetitions

Live long, happy, strong, and stay young.

The practice

Meditation is exercise for the brain.

Not mysticism, not relaxation

Trained attention

Muscle responds to repeated load; so does attention. The claim underneath the whole method is that most of what obstructs a life is mental congestion rather than circumstance.

The second autosuggestion

I can and I will

“I am a believer. I have a brave heart. I can and I will.” Repeated deliberately and often enough that it stops being something you say and becomes something you assume.

Where this pillar leans

Composure practised alone becomes a private accomplishment nobody benefits from.
